Using tuning forks for healing: Demystifying tuning fork frequencies

Tuning forks are powerful tools for sound healing, tapping into specific frequencies that resonate with our bodies and the natural world.

These frequencies may be drawn from cosmic movements, the Earth’s own resonance or ancient musical scales, and they’re believed to promote harmony and balance within us.

From the Cosmic Octave frequencies – rooted in the movements of the planets and astronomical objects – to the Earth’s Schumann Resonance and the ancient Solfeggio scale, we explore the origins behind each set of frequencies and how they may be a complimentary aid to relaxation, balance and more harmonious physical and mental wellbeing.

The Schumann Resonance / Otto frequencies

The Schumann Resonances – named after German physicist Winfried Otto Schumann – are the low-frequency electromagnetic waves (one being 7.83hz) that are always happening in the space between the Earth’s surface and the ionosphere, caused by lightning strikes and other natural electrical activity.

Research has shown that living organisms, including humans, may have evolved in such a way that they are in sync with these frequencies.

The Otto frequencies, based on Schumanns discovery, researched and further developed by Dr. John Beaulieu for sound therapy, are renowned for their beneficial effects on the body. These frequencies can help to relieve joint, muscle and nerve pain, improve circulation and promote relaxation. Otto Tuners resonate through the bones and body tissues, stimulating nerves and releasing deep-seated tension, offering a soothing and restorative experience.

The Cosmic Octave frequencies; ‘Musica universalis’

Originating in Ancient Greece, Musica universalis – also known as ‘The Universal Sound’ or ‘The Music of the Spheres’ – is a philosophical concept where the movements of the Sun, Moon and planets are believed to produce sound..

Pythagoras, the ancient Greek philosopher and polymath, theorised that the celestial bodies all emit a unique ‘hum’ or frequency based on their orbits. In 1978, a Swiss mathematician and musicologist named Hans Coustou converted these movements into frequencies audible to the human ear. These are known as the ‘Cosmic Octave frequencies’.

When the Cosmic Octave frequencies are played during mediation, they are thought to put the body in tune with the cosmos.

The Solfeggio scale

The ancient Solfeggio scale can be traced back to mediaeval times and perhaps most well known for its use in the Gregorian Chants. The six-note scale was developed by a Benedictine monk and music theorist Guido d’Arezzo in the 8th century, assigning specific syllables to each note in a musical scale. This system became known as the Solfège scale. In recent times, three additional frequencies have been discovered and added to the scale. Giving us a total of 9 Solfeggio frequencies. The original 6 frequencies were in the range from 396hz-852hz.

Chakra frequencies

There are various schools of thought about chakra frequencies. One is the Solfeggio frequencies are believed to relate to each of the body’s chakras. Another is the Cosmic Octave frequencies relate to the Chakras.
