Mercury Gong FAQ: Everything you need to know about the 32″ Mercury Gong

From what they sound like to how they’re used, we’ve answered all your questions about Paiste Mercury Gongs.

What is the significance of Mercury frequency tuning?

Mercury frequency tuning (C#2, 70.64 Hz) is calculated from Mercury’s rotational properties using Hans Cousto’s methods.

Mercury, the smallest planet and closest to the Sun, completes its orbit in just 88 Earth days, making it the fastest-moving planet in our solar system.

In Astrology, Mercury is known for governing communication, intellect, and the movement of ideas. Mercury’s symbol reflects movement and connection – echoed in this gong’s lively response.

Who is Hans Cousto?

Hans Cousto, author of “The Cosmic Octave,” was a distinguished mathematician and musicologist from Switzerland. In his seminal work, he reveals a natural formula that interlinks diverse phenomena, such as planetary orbits, weather patterns, colours and rhythms.

What does the Paiste Mercury Gong sound like?

The Paiste Mercury Gong produces an impressively deep fundamental tone that will resonate for ages, accompanied by various overtones. The vibrations of this 32” Mercury Gong can be palpable when standing in front or behind the Gong.

What is the Paiste Mercury Gong used for?

Primarily used for gong baths, sound healing sessions and therapeutic treatments, Mercury can also be used for mediation or incorporated into Yoga sessions.,.

How do I play my Paiste Mercury Gong?

Begin by gently tapping the edge of the gong in a circular motion to “warm up” or “prime” the metal of your gong with a soft mallet, such as the M6 Paiste Gong Mallet. This initiates vibration across the entire surface, allowing the gong to respond more fully and produce a richer, fuller sound when you strike it with the mallet.

Then, strike the mid-region of the Gong, with controlled, deliberate motions. Start softly and gradually increase intensity to explore dynamics. Focus on listening and responding to the evolving sound, as each gong has unique tonal characteristics.

How do I care for my Paiste Mercury Gong?

Store your Paiste Earth Gong in a dry environment, away from extreme temperatures and moisture.

Use a soft cloth to clean off dust, and keep in a protective bag or cover with a soft material/sheet to keep off dust when not in use. Each Paiste Gong has a wax coating, which means you should not need to polish/rewax for a long time.

Try not to get fingerprints on the face of the gong, as this can introduce moisture or dirt to the wax. We recommend holding your gong by the cord or the rim. Alternatively, you could wear soft gloves to ensure your gong is kept free of fingerprints.
