Didgeridoos: The iconic sound of Australia

The didgeridoo – also spelled didjeridu – has been played by First Nations people for at least 1,500 years. This is evidenced by ancient rock art in the Northern Territory, where cave paintings show figures playing long, trumpet-like instruments, believed to be early didgeridoos.

Meinl Sonic Energy’s didgeridoos are a contemporary evolution of this traditional instrument, handcrafted in Germany from mahogany or bamboo, in seven distinctive styles. The innovative S- and Z-shaped designs deliver full tone and volume in a compact size, making them ideal for travel. The Sliced models feature a screw mechanism that separates the instrument into two parts for easy portability.

The name “didgeridoo” is not a First Nations term, and is believed to be an onomatopoetic term coined by European colonialists to describe the instrument’s unique sound. Across First Nations communities, this instrument is known by many names. In Yolŋu Matha, it’s called yidaki; the Lardil people of Mornington Island refer to it as djibolu; and in Millingimbi, the Djinang people call it rirtakki.

Traditionally, the didgeridoo is only played by men during ceremonial and cultural events, often accompanied by clapsticks and rhythmic chanting. Today, the didgeridoo is played by people of all genders from around the world.

All you need to know about Meinl didgeridoos

How do I play my Meinl didgeridoo?

The didgeridoo is usually played while sitting or kneeling, with one end resting on the ground. Place your lips on the mouthpiece to create a seal. Then blow softly, keeping your lips loose so they can vibrate and create the instrument’s unique sound.

Beginners often start with a simple drone or hum, but with practice, you can produce a wide range of rhythms and effects using your lips, voice, and a technique called circular breathing.

Circular breathing is a technique used by didgeridoo players where one breathes through their nose at the same time as blowing air into the didgeridoo using air stored in their checks. This allows them to maintain a continuous sound.

Can anyone play the didgeridoo?

With a little practice, anyone can learn to play the didgeridoo. While traditionally played only by First Nations men in ceremonial settings, people worldwide now play the didgeridoo for music, meditation, and even therapeutic breathing exercises.

Can I travel with my Meinl didgeridoo?

Yes – Meinl’s compact S- and Z-shaped didgeridoos and sliced didgeridoos, which come apart into two pieces, are all designed for easy travel.

Do Meinl didgeridoos have any health benefits?

A Swiss study found that regular didgeridoo playing may help improve breathing and reduce sleep apnea symptoms. Just 20 minutes a day of circular breathing practice has been linked to better sleep quality and reduced airway obstruction.
