Paiste Planet Gongs: The sound of the cosmos
Paiste Planet Gongs combine more than a century of German craftsmanship with one of the most fascinating discoveries in modern musicology. Individually handcrafted by Paiste in Germany, every Planet Gong is precisely tuned using Swiss mathematician and musicologist Hans Cousto’s Cosmic Octave system, which converts the orbital frequencies of the Earth, Moon, Sun and planets into audible musical tones. This groundbreaking discovery, first published in 1978, demonstrated that the natural cycles of our solar system could be expressed as sound by repeatedly doubling or halving planetary frequencies until they fall within the range of human hearing. The result is a remarkable collection of Cosmic Octave Gongs, each with its own distinctive pitch, resonance and symbolic connection to a celestial body.
The concept echoes the ancient philosophy of the “music of the spheres”, which proposed that the movements of the heavens create a universal harmony. Whether used for meditation, sound healing, yoga or musical performance, Paiste Planet Gongs create rich, evolving soundscapes that many practitioners find deeply immersive and inspiring. Their tonal characteristics are comparable to Paiste’s renowned Symphonic Gongs and are available in sizes ranging from 24″ to 38″.
“When the person… is in tune with the cosmos, then the cosmos is resonating in the person. When you become aware of this, consciousness reaches cosmic dimensions.”
– Hans Cousto
